Short Game Practice Coaching Plan

Developing a short game practice framework into your practice routine is incredibly important if you want to lower your scores.  Lots of amateur golfers’ practice for hours on the range trying to perfect the full swing with their irons and woods.  But they spend little time practicing the short game.

Dave Pelz is one of the leading teachers of the short game who coaches many top tour players including Phil Mickelson and Patrick Reed.  Through the course of his teaching career, 11 of his students have won a total of 21 Major Championships.  So, we can assume that he is an expert on the short game.

He recommends that golfers should divide their practice time into thirds “one-third for their short game, one-third for putting, and one-third for the full swing, and practice them in that order”.

The aim of the Short Game Practice plan is to provide you with some drills to help you practice your short game.

Lesson Learning Outcomes

The Putting Practice Coaching Plan aims to:

  • Inspire golfers to develop their short game technique
  • Golf is a motor skill and therefore, requires repetition of movement through focused drills to help your brain store the new skill
  • Help golfers develop good stance, posture and balance
  • How to focus your sessions
  • Understand how training aids can provide instant feedback

Learning Process

Although everyone may have a preferred method of learning, the process of skill acquisition follows a typical format:

  • Initiation success rate 1-2 out of 10
  • Acquisition success rate 2-3 out of 10
  • Consolidation success rate 3-5 out of 10
  • Refinement success rate 5-7 out of 10
  • Expertise success rate 7-9 out of 10

One of the issues that hampers many peoples progress, is patience or the lack of it.

The speed at which you progress through the process from initiate to expert depends on a combination of factors:

  • Natural physical ability
  • Realistic goal setting
  • Quality of instruction
  • Practice time

For your practice to be successful you need to be mindful of your natural ability.  Set goals that are realistic and achievable with a realistic time frame.  Following our programme will help you improve your game and ultimately your enjoyment of golf.

Best Chance of Success

We have developed our programme based on golf science and modern teaching techniques. All you need to do is commit to the process and dedicate some time to practice and:

  • Understand the theory of the technique
  • Give the technique a try
  • Reflect on how it worked for you
  • Understand that it will take time and practice to develop the skill to get to the expert stage
